Digital learning
A technology enhanced curriculum
Porter-Gaud believes technology powerfully enhances the curriculum and is an effective tool for individual and collaborative learning.
Technology at Porter-Gaud
We encourage the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and teach our students how to pair these skills with technology to help solve real world problems and grasp dynamic content.
In our Lower and Middle Schools, students use iPads as a tool to consume and create educational content.
Please see the guidelines below for how we manage our technology at Porter-Gaud.
Lower and Middle School Ipad Program
Why an iPad for LS and MS students? |
---|
We chose the iPad for our Lower School and Middle School because it's a device that will help engage students in any time, any place learning, consolidates many educational tools including textbooks, science probes, calculators, calendars, cameras, video recorders, maps, dictionaries, and organizers, and finally, it's cost effective, has a long battery life, and is easy to use and support. A few added benefits are that the iPad will help lighten the load of backpacks and assist in our goal to reduce the amount of printing and photocopying. We truly believe that it's a tool that fits the LS and MS curriculum. |
Do I need to purchase an iPad for school? |
We do this for few reasons:
|
Will the Internet be filtered on the student iPads? |
School-issued devices are filtered on and off campus. We discuss how to filter your personal devices during one of our parent training sessions. |
What educational resources/apps are used? |
First, we ensure we align our technology use with ISTE’s technology standards. Please click on this link to find out more: |
List of apps
Can students install their own apps? |
---|
No. We want these devices to be educational tools. Because of this, we will be restricting what apps students can install. |
Will my child still need a computer even if he/she has an iPad? |
The iPad is not a replacement for a computer or laptop. We will continue to provide access to computers and laptops on campus on carts or in labs to support specific projects and software. We may slowly eliminate laptops as students and teachers become more comfortable using the ipad for all projects. Because of our commitment in computer science, we will continue to have computer labs to support high end and advanced software. |
What happens if an iPad gets broken, lost, or stolen? |
All school iPads have maintenance and insurance. This will cover any defects in the iPad for three-years including the iPad battery. Insurance will also cover accidental damage caused by misuse as well as theft or lost iPads. If your child accidentally damages the iPad, we will get it fixed and provide a loaner iPad for your child while it's being repaired. We will also charge the family a deductible of $50 to fix the device. |
Is there an Acceptable use policy for students and technology? |
Yes, it can be found here: The policy is also included in the student handbook. |
Upper School Laptop Program
Why laptops for Upper School Students? |
---|
Porter-Gaud believes students need to have a deep understanding across all subject areas to succeed at the next level, while continuing to adapt and add new skills such as creativity, critical thinking, problem solving, communication, and collaboration. Our students and faculty believe the laptop is the right tool to include in their academic toolbelt. |
How will they be used? |
First, we ensure we align our technology use with ISTE’s technology standards. Please click on this link to find out more: https://www.iste.org/standards Each class and grade will have specific uses for these devices. These devices will be utilized as a research tool, for creating projects, a communication hub, an organizer, a digital backpack and more. The teachers will be very clear in terms of how the device will be used in and out of the class. |
Who owns the laptop and why? |
The school has full ownership of the devices. This is for few reasons:
|
What are the current laptop specs? |
|
Can students take the laptop home and will the internet be filtered? |
Yes. School-issued devices are filtered on and off campus. We will discuss how to filter your personal devices during one of our parent training sessions. |
How much do I owe for the laptop? |
Tuition includes the cost of the device, software, case, charger and support. |
Will all their books be on the laptop? |
Some, but we will continue to look at digital resources that fit our curriculum. |
What happens if a laptop gets broken, lost, or stolen? |
All school laptops have maintenance and insurance. This will cover any defects in the laptop for four-years including the battery. Insurance will also cover accidental damage caused by misuse as well as theft or lost laptops. If your child accidentally damages the laptop, we will get it fixed and provide a loaner laptop for your child while it's being repaired. We will also charge the family a deductible of $50 to fix the device. |
Is there an Acceptable use policy for students and technology? |
Yes, it can be found here. The policy is also included in the student handbook. https://sites.google.com/portergaud.edu/pgstudenttechaup/home |
Will there be any training for my child? |
We will have workshops and orientation in August and September to make sure they understand how to use the technology as well as understand what is appropriate and inappropriate. |
Innovation Centers
Porter-Gaud harnesses technology to extend beyond the typical boundaries of education. We are always introducing cross-curricular projects to bring together Art, Science, Math and other subjects to enhance student learning and learning spaces.
Design Lab |
---|
We want spaces that allow students to focus on an idea, tackle a problem, or express themselves and collaborate on shared goals. The design lab lets our students collaborate and see the design process from an idea all the way to a finished product. |
Media Centers & Libraries |
All media centers/libraries have digital resources available for students. These resources are available on the libraries website and include digital media and catalogs for research and learning. |
